Sexual Assault Statistics in the U.S.

Everyone wants someone to love them. To be able to feel the warm touch of another, their hand on yours, their skin next to yours, all of these things are a part of life that simply cannot be ignored. Regardless of whether you are 15 or 50, the feel of someone next to you is critical to making it through from one day to the next.

Sadly, many people end up getting caught up in their emotions and allow their judgment to be altered in a way that prevents them from standing up for themselves. Sexual assault happens all the time. In fact, 80% of cases occur when the individual is under the age of 30. What young person should have to deal with such a heinous crime when just beginning their journey toward finding that special someone in their life?

Even more startling, 44% of all those who were the victim of some type of sexual assault aren’t even 18 years of age. No child should ever be the victim of a sexual assault, let alone an adult. While no one ever thinks they will be a victim, it happens every 107 seconds in America. Think about it: every couple of minutes someone is being attacked. You could very well be the next person on the list. There is no way to predict whether it will happen to you, but educating yourself about the seriousness of the situation is a great way to make sure you aren’t putting yourself more in harm’s way.

With more than 293,000 cases of sexual assault every single year, it doesn’t appear that this is going to stop anytime soon. Even if you have never been a victim, you probably know someone or have heard of someone who has at one point in time or another. Whether it be that someone had too many drinks in the bar and started to touch you inappropriately or a nanny went after your children and touched them in places that should never have been seen, it happens more often than you might think.

Unfortunately, many people never say anything to anyone about the crime that they were a part of. They feel they were to blame for what happened or they are ashamed to tell anyone. Some feel that they can just move past it and put the whole thing behind them if they simply don’t talk about it with anyone. As much as you might want to do that, you need to speak to someone who can help you through this terrible ordeal.

Just because more than 65% of cases are never reported, that doesn’t mean you need to add to that number. With 98% of all rapists getting away with what they did, isn’t it about time the perpetrators started spending some serious time behind bars thinking about what they did to someone else? Don’t allow this act to go unpunished. The individual will only go out and do it to someone else. Next time, it might be worse than what it was this time around.

Remember, just because you might think you know the individual, that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to do something to hurt you. Most of the sexual assaults committed today are done by someone who knows the victim. While you might think you know all of your friends, you better think twice and make sure you are protected at all times. Don’t go it alone when dealing with someone of the opposite sex that you aren’t that acquainted with.
