UPDATED: Duarte Teacher Arrested, Accused of Indecent Exposure
Glendora resident surrendered after warrant was issued stemming from the incident Nov. 12.
UPDATED, 7:58 p.m.: Glendora Police spoke with administrators at the Duarte Unified School District Wednesday and informed them fully of the arrest of Wilcoxon.
The Duarte teacher has taught for a little less than 10 years at Northview Intermediate School, having taught science to 7th and 8th graders, said Miriam Fox, assistant superintendent of personnel andstudent services .
Administrators are preparing a letter that will be sent to the homes of students by Thursday afternoon. Wilcoxon will be placed on leave once administrators discuss the situation with him, Fox said.
"This is very distressing for all of us. We are always very concerned for our staff and students. The one thing we wanted to make very clear is that based on the information we have at this time it does not involve children," Fox said.
PREVIOUSLY: A Glendora man, who is also an area teacher, was arrested Tuesday after authorities accused him of committing indecent exposure earlier in November.
Police arrested Steven Wilcoxon, 58, on suspicion of indecent exposure. Bail is set at $50,000. Wilcoxon is being held at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles, awaiting a court appearance in West Covina some time today, police said in a written statement.
Glendora officers were called Nov. 12 to the 600 block of West Route 66 at 11:22 a.m. by several employees of a nearby business. The employees reportedly witnessed a naked Wilcoxon laying down in a chair on his balcony across the street masturbating, police said.
Officers attempted to contact Wilcoxon, but were unable to find him. Police later identified Wilcoxon and the three witnesses positively identified him through a photographic lineup. Police were eventually able to contact the teacher who has been cooperating with the investigation, police said.
Wilcoxon is a teacher in the Duarte Unified School District at an intermediate school. District officials in Duarte have been notified of the arrest, police said.
Administrators were not immediately available toconfirm which school Wilcoxon teaches at.
A warrant was issued for Wilcoxon's arrest Nov. 27 after the case was presented to the District Attorney's Office in West Covina. Wilcoxon surrendered himself at the Glendora Police Station that same day.
